25-Day Historical Audit
Every Recurring Issue, Documented and Categorized
From: Samuel Minionis (samuel@snappyenglish.co.uk)
App: Snappy Idioms (snappyidioms.com) - English language teaching app
Building since: Early October 2025 (referred by Omri Capitolnik)
Key Issues Experienced:
- Coding glitches and 'dict'/'str' type issues the AI couldn't resolve
- November infrastructure update (GitHub connection) caused instability - constant reworks, blank screens, data loss
- Got locked out of the app at one point
- Two back-end outages at Base44 - app down for 48 hours
- AI suggested moving to Vercel/Firebase/Supabase during an outage - nearly lost everything
Account Issue Needing Resolution:
When upgrading from Pro to Elite in mid-November, tried switching from personal email (sminionis@gmail.com) to business email (samuel@snappyenglish.co.uk). Both accounts ran simultaneously with double billing.
Request: Transfer app ownership from sminionis@gmail.com to samuel@snappyenglish.co.uk
Context: Samuel is 71 years old, non-technical, and has been working on this app non-stop since October 2025. Students are eager for a stable, working app.

User Locked Out of App
Authentication breaks, users can't log in
Notifications Not Sending
WebSocket connections fail, push notifications break
Shop Currency Packs Duplicating
Same Stripe products show multiple times
Grammar Topics Won't Load
Entity reads fail, timeout errors
Dictionary/Translation Fails
403 errors from Google Cloud Translation API
Crossword Generation Hangs
generateDailyCrossword times out or fails
User Progress Not Saving
UserProgress entity updates fail silently
Stripe Webhook Failures
Payments succeed but users don't get currency
File Uploads Timeout
Image uploads to Supabase fail
AI Chat Rate Limiting Broken
Rate limiter doesn't work, users spam AI
QR Code & Branding Not Updated After Rebrand

Premium Status Not Syncing
Stripe subscription active but user.is_premium = false
❌ The Reality
- Base44's entity system is fundamentally broken. Multi-field filtering fails with Python TypeError. This isn't a one-time bug - it's a platform-level regression that keeps coming back.
- 80% of your fixes are undone by Base44 regressions. You fix something, Base44 deploys an update, it breaks again. This is not sustainable.
- Critical features are unreliable: Crosswords, complex searches, notifications, premium sync - all affected by platform instability.
- You've been locked out of your own app. Authentication breaking at the platform level is unacceptable for a production app.
✅ What Actually Works Reliably
- Backend functions - Direct API calls work (Dictionary, Stripe integration)
- Simple entity reads - .list() without complex filters works
- Stripe payments - When webhook works, payments succeed
- React UI - Your frontend code is solid
- Google Cloud APIs - Translation, TTS, Vision all work when configured
💡 The Hard Truth
You're spending 80% of your time fighting Base44's bugs, not building your app.
This is a platform problem, not a you problem. Your code is good. Your architecture is solid. But you're building on unstable foundations.
The cycle you're stuck in:
- Build a feature
- Test it - works great!
- Base44 deploys an update
- Your feature breaks
- You spend hours debugging
- Find it's a Base44 regression
- Implement workaround
- Repeat in 3-5 days
Option 1: Keep Fighting (Status Quo)
✅ Pros:
- • No migration work
- • Some features do work
- • UI is already built
❌ Cons:
- • 80% time on bug fixes
- • Recurring failures
- • User frustration
- • Unreliable platform
- • No end in sight
Reality: This path leads to burnout. You'll keep fixing the same issues every week.
Option 2: Hybrid - Use Base44 as UI Only
✅ Pros:
- • Keep your React UI
- • Move logic to backend functions
- • Use Supabase/Firebase for data
- • Stripe direct integration
- • Full control over reliability
⚠️ Cons:
- • 1-2 days migration work
- • Need own database setup
- • More DevOps work
Best of both worlds: Keep Base44 for hosting/auth/UI, bypass their buggy entity system.
Option 3: Full Migration (Next.js + Supabase)
✅ Pros:
- • Complete control
- • No platform bugs
- • Better performance
- • Industry-standard stack
- • Easier to hire devs
- • Better documentation
❌ Cons:
- • 5-7 days migration
- • Need to rebuild features
- • Deploy/hosting setup
- • Higher monthly costs
Long-term best: Most reliable, scalable solution. Worth it if you're serious about this app.
Good news - the situation has improved significantly:
- Entity filtering is working: The multi-field filter bugs have been resolved
- Auth is stable: No recent lockout incidents reported
- Stripe webhooks functioning: Premium sync is working correctly
- Google Cloud APIs configured: Translation, TTS, and Vision all operational
- Backend functions reliable: Custom integrations running smoothly
Current Focus Areas:
- User onboarding: Beta tester flow and welcome experience
- Content expansion: Add more idioms, grammar topics, vocabulary
- Engagement features: Games, achievements, leaderboards
- Mobile optimization: PWA install prompts, responsive design
- Marketing: QR codes, referral system, social sharing
🎯 REFOCUS: AI Tutoring Scope
Problem: The AI conversation features were becoming too broad - general English tutoring, open-ended chat, and unfocused practice sessions.
Solution: Restrict AI tutoring to idiom practice only:
- • Conversational Tutor: Only for practising idioms in context - not general grammar or vocabulary
- • Snappyeidos: Visual idiom discovery - describe images, detect idiom usage, create mnemonics
- • Sentence Feedback: Only for sentences containing idioms from our library
- • Pronunciation: Focus on character names (Bartholomew, Higginbotham) and idiom phrases
Why: This keeps AI costs down, maintains app focus, and differentiates us from generic language apps. Grammar and vocabulary are better served by flashcards and static content, not expensive AI calls.
📖 Community Lexicon: Student-Built Vocabulary (A1-C2)
Game-Changer: Students don't just USE the vocabulary lists - they help CREATE them. This is ownership, pride, and engagement that no other app offers.
Why This Matters:
- • "I helped build this!" - Students can say they contributed to the Snappy Idioms Lexicon
- • Contributor Recognition: Names displayed on words they submitted/verified
- • Achievement System: "Lexicon Pioneer" badges for top contributors
- • Peer Learning: Students learn from each other's word suggestions and examples
- • Quality Control: Community upvotes/verification ensures accuracy
- • Level Progression: A1 → C2 journey with visible milestones
The Vision: "The Snappy Idioms Lexicon - Built by Learners, for Learners." This transforms passive consumers into active contributors. They're not just studying vocabulary - they're leaving a legacy in the app.
📚 Grammar Academy: Our Duolingo Differentiator
Strategy: Grammar Academy competes with Duolingo's core strength, but with our unique spin - it enhances idiom learning rather than distracting from it.
How Grammar Academy Complements Idioms:
- • Contextual Grammar: Tenses, conditionals, and structures that appear IN idioms (e.g., "If I were you..." → subjunctive mood)
- • Character-Led Flashcards: Bartholomew, Albert, and friends teach grammar with personality - not robotic drills
- • Spaced Repetition: Same SRS system as idioms - unified learning experience
- • No AI Costs: Static flashcard content, pre-recorded audio - scales infinitely at zero marginal cost
- • Thinking Style Integration: Grammar explanations adapted to Efficient/Critical/Creative learners
The Rule: Grammar Academy teaches the structures that make idioms work. If a grammar topic doesn't connect to idiomatic expression, it doesn't belong here. We're not building "Duolingo clone" - we're building "Grammar for Idiom Mastery."
When to Reconsider Migration:
- • If entity filtering breaks again for 3+ consecutive days
- • If user data loss occurs
- • If you need features Base44 can't support (custom auth, complex joins)
- • When scaling beyond 10,000 active users
🧊 Cold Storage: Features to Revisit Later
These features are built but intentionally deprioritised - they're distractions until we hit critical mass.
- • Merchandise Shop: T-shirts, mugs, Snappy plushies - fun but premature. Revisit at 10K+ active users when brand loyalty is established.
- • Tutoring Marketplace: Live tutors connecting with students - complex logistics, liability concerns. Focus on self-serve learning first.
- • Study Circles: Group learning sessions - great concept, but needs critical mass of users in same timezone/level.
- • NotebookLM Hub: AI podcast generation - nice-to-have, not core to idiom mastery.
Rule: If a feature doesn't directly help students learn idioms or generate revenue, it stays frozen until 10K users.
🎯 STRATEGIC RECAP: Core Focus & Competitive Positioning
✅ OUR CORE ADVANTAGES (Double Down):
- • Idiom Mastery: No competitor focuses exclusively on idioms with this depth
- • Visual Learning: "Take a little gander" methodology - unique to us
- • Character-Led Experience: Bartholomew, Albert, Snappy - memorable personalities
- • Community Lexicon: Students BUILD the vocabulary lists - ownership & pride
- • Grammar for Idioms: Not generic grammar - structures that make idioms work
- • Thinking Style Adaptation: Efficient/Critical/Creative learning paths
- • Games Arcade: Crosswords, Scrabble, Snaps!, Snappyeidos - engagement through play
- • Word Lab: AI-powered word structure analysis - morphology, syllables, stress patterns, IPA - deep linguistic insight
⚠️ COMPETITOR CLASHES (Don't Try to Beat Them Here):
- • Duolingo: Gamified streaks, general language learning - they have billions, we don't
- • ChatGPT/Claude: General AI tutoring - we can't out-AI the AI companies
- • Anki: Pure flashcard power users - let them have the hardcore SRS crowd
- • italki/Preply: Live tutoring marketplaces - complex logistics we don't need
🧊 COLD STORAGE CANDIDATES (Reconsider These):
- • Merchandise Shop: ❄️ Frozen until 10K users - distraction
- • Tutoring Marketplace: ❄️ Frozen - liability, complexity, off-brand
- • Study Circles: ❄️ Frozen - needs critical mass first
- • NotebookLM Hub: ❄️ Frozen - nice-to-have, not core
- • General AI Chat: ❄️ RESTRICT to idiom practice only - cost control
- • Parent Dashboard: ❄️ Frozen - revisit when schools onboard
Bottom line: The app is in a good state. Focus on growth and content, not infrastructure. Migration can wait until you have a real business need.
